Tropical "garden" in Moscow / Orchid Garden in Moscow
The main event of the festival is an exhibition of living blooming orchids in the historic Palm Greenhouse, where summer is winter, and therefore many orchids, following their natural rhythms, bloom even in these dark and cold months of the year. During the festival, the palm greenhouse is transformed into a tropical paradise, where orchids of the most incredible colors and shapes, where colors and smells are stupefying and reminiscent of summer.
Orchids are the largest family of the plant kingdom, they make up almost a tenth of the total variety of plants on Earth, they can be found on all continents except Antarctica. Of course, most species of orchids live in the tropics, where botanists discover
new species. The flowers of some orchids reflect the slightest gleam of light in such a way that they almost glow in the dense dusk of the rainforest to attract pollinators. Others for the same purpose exude strange, sometimes unexpected smells - incense, dust, naphthalene. Some smell constantly, others begin to emit fragrant charms only with the onset of darkness, showing the night moths the path to the desired flower. All these aromas are intended for them - insects. Orchids have developed close relationships with them over millions of years. And with our weak sense of smell, we are just lucky that we can witness this complex signaling system in which deceit and deceit are common.
Children (yes, to be honest, adults too!) Will especially like the whole collection of insectivorous plants exposed in the open: venus flytraps, sundews, pitchers and other “predators” of the plant kingdom demonstrate sophisticated devices for catching unlucky insects (and sometimes small rodents) !). Only feeding them is forbidden: in winter they have a strict diet.
Of course, we arranged all this not only for the pleasure of visitors. The purpose of the Orchid Festival is not only to impress visitors with the beauty of these fragile creatures, but also to remind once again that the fate of all earthly nature is more than ever in our hands.
