Six steps to good vision
Take the electricity bill, hold it about 1 m 20 cm from your eyes and try to read what is written there ... Is it difficult? Have to squint, straining your eyes? So, you are faced with a typical problem for middle-aged people: a common phenomenon known as presbyopia or, more simply, “age-related farsightedness” (as if wrinkles in the corners of our eyes are not enough).
Usually, farsightedness begins after forty, when the eye lens loses its flexibility, and at the same time its ability to focus, it becomes difficult for us to see objects located nearby. In this case, vision correction is necessary.
So, if you have not checked your eyes for a long time, do it soon. Ophthalmologists advise that, starting at the age of 40, examinations should be carried out regularly and in accordance with the recommendations of the doctor.
Our practical tips will help you navigate when solving the most common problems.
When buying reading glasses seemed suitable for you, but at home you found that they are not strong enough.
When buying glasses, grab a page of text with small print. Thus, you yourself will be able to determine on the spot whether the glasses are right for you. By the way, the fact that ready-made reading glasses may not suit you is more likely a rule than an exception. Most people need to select lenses individually, and this can only be done after careful testing and examination by an ophthalmologist.
You work with glasses, but nevertheless you do not see the image on the monitor clearly enough.
You need glasses with high-tech lenses. 90% of people working at a computer all day suffer from excessive eye strain, loss of image clarity, and other symptoms of "computer vision syndrome" - such data are presented by the International Association of Ophthalmologists.
As a rule, bifocal lenses are used to correct age-related presbyopia - divided into two optical segments. One is designed to correct near vision, the other is into the distance. When you are wearing such glasses, projected onto the retina with different sharpness images of objects located both at a distance and close to the eyes. Looking into the distance, a person clearly sees objects located far from him, and at the same time a blurred image of objects located close to the retina gets. And when you look at objects near you, the opposite process occurs: a clear image of close objects and unsharp images of distant objects are projected on the retina.
If you have to strain your eyesight with bifocal lenses, change them to multifocal (they are called progressive) with “blurred” optical zones, this will help you by increasing the distance from the monitor to clearly see the text.
Modern progressive lenses are now available with a variety of additional options, depending on the manufacturer, they can be labeled as “digitized surface” or “high resolution” lenses. In addition, there were special frames to relieve visual fatigue. These glasses are suitable for young people with early presbyopia, they can expand the field of vision and make work in the office more comfortable.
There is another option: write out glasses designed specifically for working at the computer.
You have long worn contact lenses, but suddenly your eyes hurt and itched.
You need to give your eyes a rest, temporarily refuse to wear contact lenses and take care of moisturizing the eyes. As studies have shown, air conditioning, as well as hours of computer work, can cause dry eyes. For example, it is known that a person sitting at a monitor blinks 5 times less often than usual. This leads to the drying of the tear film and, consequently, to the dryness of the conjunctiva (mucous membrane of the eye) and the cornea of the eyes. Culprits of this discomfort can also be hormonal changes, for example, in the period preceding menopause, such phenomena are noted in about 20% of women after 40 years.
Dryness can also be an allergic reaction of the eye to the material from which the lenses are made. But more often, an allergy occurs when there is a violation of hygiene and contact lens care.
There is a large selection of moisturizing eye drops - “artificial tears”. Humidifiers at home and in the office can also help. Turn on the air conditioning in the car in the “legs only” mode. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids are very useful, especially fatty fish and cod liver. Talk with your doctor about supplementation with omega-3 supplements.
The doctor has prescribed you new glasses. You generally see them well, but they are not suitable for reading and working with a laptop.
Decision. Wear glasses higher to the bridge of the nose. People who use reading glasses often wear them too low on their nose. In full force, glasses, especially progressive ones, usually “work” only when they sit high enough. So you may need time to get used to them. If you still experience discomfort, ask a specialist to adjust the lenses.
At night, driving too bright a light hurts your eyes.
You need anti-reflective lenses. A recent study was conducted in which drivers wearing glasses or contact lenses participated. 48% of them experienced severe discomfort from the blinding light of city lamps and building lights, 61% from headlights of oncoming cars and 28% complained of rainbow circles around bright light sources. Digital anti-glare progressive lenses improve night vision, sharpen the picture and reduce exposure to bright light. Ultra-thin films reduce the level of light reflection on the surface of the lenses, thus letting in a large amount of light, which does not blind you. In addition to the anti-glare lenses that help you while driving, they will also make reading more comfortable in the light of a lamp or e-book and working with a computer.
Speaking of contact lenses. There are also aspherical lenses that have a special convex shape. At the University of Iowa, drivers were tested who were trained on a simulator that simulated real driving conditions in different lighting conditions. Drivers using aspherical lenses were much more comfortable with headlights than regular lenses.
By the way, seeing rainbow circles around sources of bright light in the dark can be the initial sign of cataracts or glaucoma. Therefore, it is better to immediately see the optometrist.
You tried to use contact lenses, but with astigmatism they are useless.
Astigmatism is a visual defect caused by deformation of the cornea, as a result of which the person's ability to see clearly is reduced or completely lost. As a rule, astigmatism is combined with either myopia or farsightedness. To compensate for irregularities, special astigmatic glasses are required that offset this difference. But astigmatism up to 1 diopter is a fairly common form, it is present in 90% of people. Nowadays it is rarely possible to meet a person whose astigmatism would be zero. But this is physiological astigmatism, which does not require optical correction.

• Glasses or lenses?
Spectacle correction is the safest, since the glasses do not come in direct contact with the eye and there is no risk of infection that can be brought in with your hands. But this can limit the physical activity of a person. Therefore, the main thing is the correct tactics of correction.
• How to choose glasses?
Glasses may be needed different, depending on the state of vision. Now there are many of the most technologically advanced options - this is a variety of bifocal and progressive lenses, and multifocal with a smooth change in optical power, adjusting to eye movement,
But all these modern technologies and techniques, as a rule, are very expensive. And optics have not yet been able to come up with a full-fledged replacement of the eye function, such as accommodation, because glass or plastic, even the most “smart” one, can only imitate the accommodation function. Therefore, I am committed to removing glasses from people so that they can see the world clearly and without the use of optics.
