GUIDE for curtains
We will tell you how to navigate and find the right option.
1. Where to start?
First you need to think about the functionality of the curtains, so for a while forget about choosing a style and style. It doesn't matter if you decide to sew curtains with your own hands or turn to the help of professionals, this will immediately narrow the scope of choice, and it will be easier to navigate. Think about whether you need curtains that greatly obscure the room and immerse it in twilight, or, on the contrary, you want to leave more sunlight. In the first case, you will need lined curtains that are more expensive, but have their own advantages. Firstly, the lining protects against drafts. The fabric does not fade in the sun, so the service life of the curtains is extended. And secondly, it gives density to the tissues and allows you to form luxurious folds. For maximum protection from light, durability, volume and insulation, you can sew curtains with an additional lining, which is sewn between the main fabric and the back lining of the curtains. This is a fairly common service in expensive salons, where curtains are sewn to order, but it is rare among ready-made inexpensive sets.
2. How to choose the right color and material for curtains?
Consider the mood and style of the room. For an official place (living room, study, library) heavy silk, jacquard or velvet (the latter, by the way, perfectly isolates the room) is suitable. Curtains made of these materials can only be cleaned with dry cleaning. There are also more affordable variants of similar fabrics that contain viscose or satin. They can be machine washed. To create a cozy chamber atmosphere, flax or "reaper" is perfect. Cotton and its varieties look good in any interior, creating a fresh, neat look, as well as fabrics with added wool.
You must decide whether you want the curtains to be in harmony in color with the decor or, conversely, to become a bright contrasting accent. In the first case, choose curtains that overlap with the color of the walls, but a few shades darker. Or stop at one of the dominant, but at the same time soft shades of the room, which is found, for example, in the colors of the carpet. Well, if you want to make the window decoration the main accent of the room, use a rich contrasting color. Do not forget that if the curtains are loose and sunlight penetrates through them, this can affect the overall shade of the room. Blue can make a room dark, and pink, on the contrary, more cheerful.
Coloring and patterns
If you already have furniture with bright upholstery, bedding, a bedspread or a carpet with a complex pattern, it is better to choose curtains from plain fabrics. If the interior is generally calm, bright curtains will be quite appropriate. Curtains with a small color or a neutral pattern emphasize a sophisticated style and at a distance they will look textured and voluminous. A large graphic pattern in color that repeats the existing decor is a bold but sometimes very effective solution.
3. How long should the curtains be?
The most common length is to the floor, unless you have a window sill that is too wide or you don’t want to open the radiators. Measure the length from the floor to the point where you are going to hang the curtain rod. The most common option when the curtains are in contact with the floor (window sill or radiator). Shorter ones look ugly.
Strict classics: floor to window or window sill
This option looks structurally and cleanly. It is especially convenient if you often close and open the curtains, because they easily return to the right place. The curtain fabric should reach the floor, slightly touching it, or be a little shorter by 0.5-1 cm. If you are going to hang curtains in the style of "cafe", which cover only the bottom of the window and hang on the mini-cornice, they should also lightly touch the windowsill. By the way, such curtains look great in the kitchen or in the bathroom, where a long drapery is inappropriate and inconvenient.
Modern: falling to the floor
A recent trend is curtains that are 3–9 cm longer than the floor level. This design looks romantic, less strict and formal. In addition, if you have uneven floors, a similar style will help to hide flaws. In living rooms and rooms in the classical style, the lengthening of the curtains can reach 15 cm of fabric falling to the floor. It looks very beautiful and elegant. The only drawback is that such curtains need decoration every time after you vacuum the floors or your cat lies near the window.
4. What should be the width of the canvas?
The width of the curtains should be 2−2.5 times greater than the width of the window. Then it will be possible to create a magnificent beautiful drapery. But, if you hang curtains for decoration and are not going to close them, in this case the width can be only one and a half times larger. Pleated linens with folded folds may not be draped, they have already given completeness and should more or less correspond to the gap that you are going to close.
5. Where to install a cornice?
The cornice can be installed higher or wider than the window frame. You can choose one of the installation options or use both at the same time. But, if you have beautiful wooden frames that you don’t want to hide behind the curtains, you can hang the curtains inside the window opening on a curtain rail, as a curtain for the bathroom is usually hung.
Above the window opening
Mount the bar 10-15 cm above the top edge of the window frame. Or choose the middle between the ceiling skirting and the top of the window, but do not back down more than 20 cm, it may look unnatural. Another option: a cornice mounted in the ceiling.
Wider than the window
A wide cornice allows you to visually enlarge the window and promotes the penetration of sunlight. In this case, the cornice should be 8-15 cm larger than the width of the window (on each side). If you want to open a beautiful wooden molding, the width of the cornice can be increased to 30 cm.

6. Top edge design
The top edge of the curtains forms the overall style of the curtains. It can be elegant and concise, romantic or solemn, or cozy and casual. In addition, how the curtains will be used depends on the design of the upper edge: to open and close freely or, conversely, to remain in place.
The loops or garters on the ribbons thrown over the cornice strip look very elegant and gentle if the fabric is light. For thicker fabrics, you can fasten button loops. The options are endless.
On hooks or grommets
Curtains with a smooth upper edge, which is attached to crocodiles or eyelets, are very convenient to open and close. The option is suitable for the bedroom, as well as for fabrics with an interesting pattern.
Curtains on the curtain
A good option for curtains that should not open freely, because moving the curtain back and forth is quite difficult. Fixed-top curtains can be tied up with grabs.
Folds add splendor, so they are usually used in rooms with a classic style. The folds are double, triple, French, oncoming, cup-shaped
The depth of the folds varies from 7 to 25 cm.

7 Other design options
It is not necessary to hang curtains on the window cornice. There are many inexpensive but effective ways to design a window, for example, smooth fabric panels that are easy do it yourself and keep clean. This is an interesting solution for bay windows, non-standard narrow windows, as well as for casement doors where traditional curtains cannot be used.
The fabric panel can be fixed to an element of a decorative screen made of durable cardboard, which is usually used to design heating radiators. The necessary part of the screen is trimmed with a knife and fastened just above the window frame or doorway. The soft panel is tied with ribbons or braid.
On the hooks
A simple mounting option is a wooden hanger with hooks for clothes or a simple board with a chamfer, on which the hooks are then screwed at an equal distance from each other. The upper edge of the fabric in this case can be decorated with hanging loops of durable fabric.
On the handles
Instead of a cornice or plank, you can use handles for cabinets and chests of drawers. It is necessary to hang a wooden plank on the wall, into which decorative handles are then screwed. The edge of the fabric panel is fixed with eyelets located at the same distance from each other.
You can add an interesting detail to simple plain curtains with the help of a bright wide braid, stitching it to the upper edge of the curtains with a zigzag in several places and passing it through the ledge. If the window or door opens inward, it is better to tie the curtains on the sides.
Hinges can be attached to the curtains with double-sided rivets. For loops suitable durable suture tape, leather or suede. The rivet buttons can be inserted independently using a special press-punch or go to the workshop.
You can choose the buttons that are suitable in color and style, or simply unusual buttons, sew them to the fabric and “fasten” the upper edge of the curtains by simply throwing it over the ledge. Button holes can be sewn by hand. Large and voluminous buttons will look especially beautiful. Color cord At equal distance from each other, loops from a decorative color cord can be fixed. You need to make several holes in the upper edge of the curtains, tie a loop in advance, and then pull it through the cornice and fix it by throwing a loop on the knot, which will fix the mount.
8. Decorative tying
Grips are usually used so that more sunlight gets into the room or a beautiful view opens from the window. And also if the curtains are conceived as one of the main elements of room decor. The hook or holder for grabs is mounted on the wall at a distance of about 2/3 below the top edge of the curtain. Hooks, as a rule, are selected to the style of the interior and the color of furniture fittings. Curtains can also be tied with beads, rope or ribbons. A simpler option: knit the curtains in the center of the window with a sash, matching the color, and decorate with a beautiful magnificent bow.
9. How to hang curtains?
A home foreman will help to establish a window cornice: a specialist’s service will cost about 1000 rubles for each window. Installation of the wall cornice will take about 20 minutes, and the ceiling - about 45 minutes. A wall cornice is not so difficult to install on your own, as they are usually sold with a set of accessories and installation instructions. You may need additional rings for hanging the curtains, as well as a stepladder, centimeter, pencil, level, screwdriver and drill. Attach the brackets by marking under the holes, then drill the holes themselves, insert the dowels and fix the brackets with screws.
